Big Ton Spring Supports for a Chemical Processing Plant

Big Ton Spring Supports for a Chemical Processing Plant

A total of 18 big ton springs of various sizes were fabricated from A516 Gr. 70N carbon steel. The big tons were designed in a rectangular configuration in order to match the existing vessel saddle supports and the concrete foundation below the springs. PTFE, 25% glass filled slide plates will be welded on the load flanges to allow horizontal movement in addition to the vertical movements specified. The largest of the big ton assemblies has an operating load of 79,000 lb. with a travel of .706″ down.

Billet Style Clevises & Turnbuckles for Temperatures up to 1000ºF for a Power Plant

Billet Style Clevis

Billet Style Clevis

The clevis and turnbuckle pictured are each fabricated from individual solid pieces of 304H stainless steel. The 304H material, which has a maximum carbon content of 0.06%, was required because these items are designed to be used in an environment with temperatures up to 1000ºF. The customer’s specifications mandated that no welding would be allowed on either the clevises or turnbuckles. Additionally, no forgings were readily available, so blocks of 304H stainless steel were utilized in this design.

Billet Style Turnbuckle

Billet Style Turnbuckle

Both the clevises and turnbuckles are made to accommodate rod diameter ranges between 1-1/4″ to 1-3/4″. These components have a maximum load capacity of 18,600 lb. The clevises measure 3″ thick x 5-1/4″ wide x 10-5/8″ tall. The turnbuckles measure 2″ thick x 4″ wide x 9-1/4″ tall. Prior to fabrication, each component was modeled using finite element analysis to determine that stress levels are within the acceptable range.

4″ to 14″ Diameter Spectacle Blinds for Process Piping

Sweco Fab, Inc., a division of PT&P, fabricated a variety of six spectacle blinds that will be used for selective line isolation. The spectacle blinds are fabricated from A516-70 carbon steel with sizes ranging from 4″ to 14″ diameter and per ASME B16.48 code. The function of a spectacle blind is to allow a line to be in either full shut-off mode or full flow mode, depending on which side is being utilized. Spectacle blinds are a lower cost alternative to double block and bleed valves where OSHA requires positive isolation of piping segments for safety reasons.
