F-Type Constants

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed, manufactured and delivered a total of 8 constants to a power plant in Mexico. The designs consisted of 4 Horizontal U-Types Upthrust (Figure 1) and 4 Vertical F-Types (Figure 2) that are to support 24-inch diameter pipes. Each consisted of different sizes. The constants are designed for loads of 2,839 lbs. to 8,963 lbs., for Total Travels ranging from 7 to 3 inches. Constants were painted CZ-11 per customer request.

Emergency Field Service Request on Constant

Emergency Field Service Request on Constant

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. and its 24×7 Quick Turn/Emergency Service were put to the test on a Friday evening when they received an emergency call from a company located in Jamaica. The Jamaican company was concerned with existing pipe supports at their location and made a request for a PT&P field services representative to visit and inspect.

An experienced PT&P field services manager arrived at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday to survey and fulfill the request.

The reported problem was a pair of rusted and decayed spring hangers dating back to 1969. After inspection, PT&P’s field services manager concluded that the aged spring hangers could no longer support the piping system due to changes in the design of the system, whereas, failure resulted in additional forces being exerted onto the steam turbine.

Following identification of the measurements, load capabilities, and movements of the spring hangers, it was apparent that the system design did not compensate for the weight of two globe valves that were added to the system at a later date. Thus, PT&P’s field services manager had to take into consideration the weight of these two globe valves when sizing the replacement parts.

PT&P supplied and delivered two Type G variable spring assemblies to Jamaica on the following Monday. Type G assemblies can accommodate unusually heavy loads, and is especially adaptable for avoiding interference in spaces where headroom is limited. In this case, the spring assembly was supporting loads in excess of 2000 lbs. and movement was limited due to its location in the powerhouse.

Specially Designed 120,000 lb Load Big-Ton Spring Supports

Pictured above are Big-Ton Spring Supports specially designed by Piping Technology & Products, Inc. These types of supports are used in supporting large and heavy units such as compressors, vessels and pumps in power and petrochemical plants. The ones below were used to support vessels in excess of 120,000 pounds. The Big-Ton Spring Support are designed to allow limited movement in confined areas. By doing this, it saves the customer from having to entirely redesign the piping system and saves thousands of dollars.

Do you need a big ton for one of your upcoming projects. Let us price one for you today!

Gas Torches

The photograph above shows a computer-controlled bank of gas torches used to burn patterns of small components from large metal plates. The geometry of the components is used to program the computer. The metal plate is on a “water table” which catches the melted material to be utilized in the national program to conserve natural resources.

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. supplies hardware, pipe supports, expansion joints and other fabricated items for petrochemical, paper and electric power plants throughout the U.S. and overseas.

Hydraulic Snubbers Protect Critical Components In Refineries

Hydraulic Snubbers Protect Critical Components In Refineries

Hydraulic Snubbers Protect Critical Components In Refineries

The photograph above shows hydraulic snubbers which are used to protect critical components in refineries, power plants and other industrial systems from sudden movement by the attached piping system. Engineers specify these devices for systems which are subject to sudden accelerations caused by earthquakes, extreme wind loads or water hammer. The insert at the upper left shows eight snubbers, some are different sizes and six have dust covers to protect the piston seal. The snubber at the bottom has hardware attached so it is ready to be installed. Hydraulic snubbers resist sudden rapid movement of the pipe by limiting the flow rate of the fluid inside the snubber. The device is designed so slow movement, such as would be expected during thermal expansion, has practically no resistance, but sudden rapid movement is resisted with a force proportional to the velocity raised to a power, where the power is determined by the orifice valve and flow pattern in the design. Selection of materials and liquids used will depend on the environment where the snubber is installed.

Polyurethane Products for Piping System

The two pictures above show two types of polyurethane products produced by Piping Technology & Products, Inc. for piping systems. At the top are cold shoes to support piping at cryogenic temperatures. The polyurethane cradle is bonded to steel shield which is welded to a T-bar. These cradles are produced by pumping the chemical components required into a mold which gives them the correct shape. At the bottom are supports produced by drilling and machining solid polyurethane blocks. Polyurethane provides both insulation and the strength to support pipes at cold temperatures.

Variable Springs in a Variety of Sizes

The two pictures above show a variety of spring supports for piping projects. At the top left is a row of spring hanger variables ready to form assemblies with rods, clamps and other hardware. Piping Technology & Products, Inc. manufactures all types of pipe supports and provides complete assemblies packaged and tagged to customer specifications for easy identification by the field crews who install them in power plants, petrochemical plants and paper mills. On the pallet at the top right and scattered through the lower picture are several Type F (base type) variable supports. Special features such as travel stops and the wide range of load and travel requirements result in a large variety of items built to satisfy particular customer requirements.

Pictured above are special Type F variable springs being prepared for shipment overseas. Finite element analysis was used to specify stronger load columns to allow for a possible 30% lateral load. Loads as high as 30,000 pounds were required for some items. These variables also required a special three coat paint (white).
