Guaranteeing Stability in Piping Infrastructure with U-Bolts

November 7, 2025

Piping Technology and Products U-Bolts and Rods

Every operationally sound piping system, from oil fields to chemical plants, relies on foundational components to maintain integrity and function. Among the simplest of these supports is the U-bolt. While they may appear basic, U-bolts are the key anchors that provide essential stability, restrain movement, and protect your valuable piping assets.

The Mechanics of the U-Bolt: Function and Design

The U-bolt is named for its distinctive “U” shape, which, when installed, wraps around the pipe and is secured to a support structure with two nuts. This design serves two primary functions in piping infrastructure: support and restraint.

The Primary Role: Stabilizing and Supporting Pipe Runs

In its most common application, a U-bolt acts as a simple hanger or support. It transfers the weight of the pipe, the fluid inside, and any insulation to the structural element (such as a girder or foundation) to which it’s fastened. Holding the pipe firmly against a saddle or resting surface prevents downward movement and maintains precise elevation.

The Secondary Role: Lateral Restraint and Guiding

U-bolts are highly effective as pipe guides or restraints. When a pipe experiences dynamic forces, such as high winds, seismic activity, or internal vibration from pumps and flow, the U-bolt prevents lateral (side-to-side) and axial (along the pipe’s length) shifting. This is crucial for:

  • Preventing Damage: Stopping the pipe from rubbing against adjacent structures or equipment to prevent costly wear and abrasion.
  • Controlling Movement: Guiding the pipe to ensure that any necessary thermal expansion or contraction occurs in the intended direction, preventing excessive stress on nozzles and connections.

U-Bolts in Action: Critical Considerations for Installation

While U-bolts are versatile, proper selection and installation are vital to prevent long-term damage to the pipe.

Protecting the Pipe: The Importance of Anti-Friction Pads

A common issue with bare metal U-bolts is metal-to-metal contact with the pipe. Over time, vibration and movement can cause the bolt to wear through the pipe coating or even the pipe wall itself: a condition known as crevice corrosion or pipe wear. To prevent this, industry best practice often requires the use of:

  • Polymer Pads (e.g., HDPE or PTFE): Installed between the U-bolt and the pipe to act as a barrier, absorbing vibration and preventing abrasion.
  • Rubber/Elastomer Lining: Used for quieter systems or in applications where vibration dampening is paramount.
Material Selection: Matching the Environment

The harsh environment of industrial facilities dictates careful material choice. For standard dry environments, galvanized carbon steel may suffice. However, in applications with high humidity, chemical exposure, or extreme temperatures, stainless steel (304 or 316) U-bolts are necessary to ensure corrosion resistance and structural integrity over decades of service.

Custom Embed Plates: The Foundation of Industrial Anchorage

Piping Technology & Products recently completed the fabrication of a substantial order of heavy-duty embed plate assemblies designed for a major construction project. These components serve as the critical interface between structural steel and concrete foundations, ensuring that dynamic and static loads are effectively transferred to the ground.

Engineering a Robust Embedded Plate

Each embedded plate in this order was fabricated from high-quality carbon steel to meet ASTM standards. The design incorporates a precise configuration of welded studs (anchors) on the underside of the plate. These studs securely anchor the plate into curing concrete, providing exceptional pull-out strength and shear resistance. To protect against corrosion and environmental exposure prior to installation, the plates were coated with a durable primer, ensuring material integrity from fabrication through placement.

The Role of Steel in Embedded Construction

In embedded construction applications, accuracy is essential. Embed plates must be positioned within formwork with exact precision before concrete placement. Once the concrete has cured, the exposed face of the embed plate provides a flat, steel-to-steel connection surface for welding structural beams, pipe supports, equipment bases, or other structural components. Custom-fabricated embed plates allow engineers to meet specific structural load requirements while eliminating the need for post-pour drilling or chemical anchors. This approach enhances structural reliability, improves installation efficiency, and reduces field labor.

Custom Embed Plates for Gold Mine in Cajamarca, Peru

December 7, 2021

Piping Technology & Products, Inc., designed and manufactured 150 custom embed plate pieces for Latin America’s largest gold producer. This gold mine is located between 3,500 and 4,100 meters above sea level in a northwestern province of Peru. The gold district is a 10 x 4 km zone of altered rocks with a belt of Tertiary volcanic that extends through Peru. Currently, precious metals are mined in three open quarries, and according to rough estimates, the investments in the development of the gold mine amounted to about 150 million US dollars.

Nightview from Active Gold Mine Processing Site

This project involved the production of 150, 93″ x 27″ x 1″ embed plates, which required the use of 80,000 pounds of steel and anchors. The custom-designed, carbon steel, embed plates provided stability for the feed openings of four mine shafts’ reclaim tunnels and were scheduled to be put to use immediately. Our manufacturing process for these embed plates entails the use of a Nelson® stud welding machine to weld the studs to carbon steel plates. The carbon steel plates can be shaped to meet the rectangular mineshaft dimensions, then the studs are welded in place. Concrete is then poured around the outside of the embed plate shaft and the studs anchor the plates in place after the concrete sets. These assemblies can then be hot-dipped galvanized to protect against corrosion.

So, whether gold, silver, coal, precious gemstones, rock salt, gravel, oil shale, or some other valuable minerals are being mined, stable mineshafts are an important part of the mining process. PT&P has also manufactured embed plates suitable for large-scale projects for use in the foundations of the chemical, refinery, wastewater treatment, and power plants.

How to Avoid Pipe Stress
What is Pipe Stress?
“Pipe Stress” refers to piping flexibility analysis.

High Stress Locations on Pipes
High stress areas generally occur at piping elbows, tees and other branch connections. The B 31.3 Piping Code provides stress intensification factors for such locations. Computer piping programs generally do piping flexibility analysis for those other than very simple systems.

Signs of Pipe Stress
An overstressed system could fail by fatigue, leading to a crack, buckling of the elbows, or overload on equipment nozzles.

How to Reduce Pipe Stress
High stress should be uncovered in the design stage. However, existing systems can be checked for incipient cracks by x-ray, ultrasound, acoustic emission or dye penetrant. Also, rerouting the pipe can provide more flexibility and sometimes reduce high stress. When rerouting is impossible or not practical, then pipe stress can be reduced significantly by adding Bellows Expansion Joints. Any sections of the pipe showing cracks must be replaced.

Anchor Bolts with Polyethylene Sleeves
Anchor Bolts with Polyethylene Sleeves

The photograph above shows anchor bolts, which are to be set in concrete with only a short portion above the surface. They are used to anchor equipment to a concrete slab by attaching to the bolts. Several of these at the top of the picture have polyethylene sleeves, which keep the wet concrete away from the bolt just below the surface. This makes it easier to make slight adjustments to the position of the bolt during attachment to the equipment which is to be anchored.
