Hot Shoes for a Chemical Plant in Texas

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and manufactured 60 Marinite® hot shoes for a chemical plant in Texas.

These hot shoes are composed of Marinite®(high-density calcium silicate) and carbon steel.  They were made for 8 NPS with 7 insulation.  These shoes are used on steam lines, effluent lines, and any other process lines where it’s imperative that thermal energy is not lost through the pipe support.  Tests were performed to show outer skin temperature at operating conditions.

Various Sized Cold Shoes for a Chemical Plant

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and manufactured 250 variable sized cold shoes for a chemical plant in Texas.

These cold shoes are designed for cryogenic (low temperature) pipelines where direct contact with the pipe cannot be made.  These shoes come with two pieces, top and bottom, and are made of polyurethane foam.  They are then wrapped in vapor barriers, covered with a protective shield and placed in a pipe saddle.

Cryogenic Pipe Anchors For A Gas Refinery

Inside of the Pipe Anchor

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. manufactured cryogenic pipe anchors for gas refinery in Savannah, Georgia. The pipe anchors were fabricated with stainless steel and insulated with polyurethane foam. In order to prevent cold pumping, better known as temperature driven moisture penetration, polyurethane foam was poured around a stainless steel reinforcing pad. The ten cryogenic pipe anchors were fabricated to support 4-inch, 8-inch and 12-inch pipes. PT&P’s pre-insulated pipe supports department is devoted to the production of pipe insulation productions for both hot and cold applications.

Specially Fabricated Pipe Supports

Specially Fabricated Pipe Supports

Specially Fabricated Pipe Supports

The photo above shows three different supports fabricated by Piping Technology & Products, Inc. for a petrochemical facility in Indonesia. The smallest support, (lower right) show the interior layer of polyurethane projecting out of the outside layer. This allows the pipe insulation to overlap when installed. These units provide insulation between the very cold fluid inside the pipe and the hot, humid conditions outside. They also support the weight of the pipe and allow for movement due to thermal expansion and contraction. Micarta was used for certain supports which require greater strength.

Insulated Pipe Supports

Insulated Pipe Supports

The photographs above show insulated pipe supports designed for a system being installed in a very cold climate in Russia. The insulating components are inside next to the pipe. The outside components are galvanized steel. In the foreground of the photo at the right are two fixtures which were built for load testing these pipe supports by applying known forces with a hydraulic load cell. Piping Technology & Products, Inc., fabricated prototype units for a Houston Engineering Firm and tested the units. After successful tests a number of similar units were built for shipment to Russia.

Polyurethane Products for Piping System

The two pictures above show two types of polyurethane products produced by Piping Technology & Products, Inc. for piping systems. At the top are cold shoes to support piping at cryogenic temperatures. The polyurethane cradle is bonded to steel shield which is welded to a T-bar. These cradles are produced by pumping the chemical components required into a mold which gives them the correct shape. At the bottom are supports produced by drilling and machining solid polyurethane blocks. Polyurethane provides both insulation and the strength to support pipes at cold temperatures.

Cryogenic Pipe Supports for a LNG Plant in Algeria

The pictures above show cryogenic pipe supports designed by a Houston E&C firm for a LNG plant in Algeria. Piping Technology & Products, Inc. fabricated the these supports for a 14” pipe which operates below –50oF. Three different materials are used. The upper part which bolts to the pipe is fabricated from an alloy which retains its strength at low temperatures. The middle section is a Permali® block selected because of its strength and durability and because it is a poor conductor of heat. The bottom plate of galvanized carbon steel is bolted to the Permali® block. Permali® is a phenolic laminate made from layers of wood impregnated under vacuum with a synthetic resin. A crossed orientation of the hard wood fibers is used to provide extra strength.

Insulated Pipe Shoes for Hot Applications

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. supplied both “hot shoes” for high temperature lines and “cold shoes” for cryogenic lines in this new plant. The shoes sit on the steel beams of the pipe rack and support the insulated pipe. The bottom photograph shows several of the shoes prior to shipment. The two large cold shoes in the foreground are lined with PUF (polyurethane foam) which functions both as an insulator and as a load bearing member at temperatures as low as –300oF. Hot shoes are lined with calcium silicate or Marinite® which can function up to 1200oF.

Pipe Shoes for Hot Temperature Applications

The pictures above show insulated pipe supports designed for two very different temperature applications. The top picture shows an inspector checking “hot” shoes for high temperature piping. They have one 180 degree section of the insulation made of foam glass and the other 180 degree made from calcium silicate. Some components are chosen for their insulating properties only, other must both insulate and support the load of the pipe. The bottom picture shows a 54 inch “cold” shoe of galvanized steel with PTFE slide plates on the bottom. Inside the galvanized steel is bonded a layer of polyurethane foam which has been coated with a white vapor barrier. This polyurethane layer provides both insulation and support of the load at cryogenic temperatures.

Color-Coded Insulating Components

Color-Coded Insulating Components

Color-Coded Insulating Components

The pictures above show pipe supports designed for a system with very cold operating temperatures. The insulating components are polyurethane, which are inside the galvanized steel exterior of the support. At the top left of the picture are the color-coded polyurethane components of a “cold shoe” for a 60” pipe, the top (green) is 14 lb/ft3 density and the bottom (orange) is 20 lb/ft3 density. The higher density material has greater compressive strength but it is a better conductor of heat. The other pictures show finished shoes which have white coating over the polyurethane. Hot shoes, designed for high operating temperatures, are similar but usually have different insulating materials.
