Big Ton Spring Supports Designed for a Liquid Natural Gas Facility in Australia

Type: Big Ton Spring Supports
Size: 19-5/8″ x 19-5/8″ x 15″
Material: Hot-dipped Galvanized Carbon Steel | A193 Gr. B7
Design: Movements: 3/16 ” – 1/4″ | 16,619 lb. Load
Testing: Load Cell throughout Operating Range

These big ton spring supports were designed for a liquid natural gas (LNG) plant in Australia. They were selected because the application required supporting heavy loads as the supported equipment undergoes thermal expansion during operation. The assemblies are fabricated from hot-dipped galvanized carbon steel. The travel stop rods and nuts material is A193 Gr. B7. The units measure 19-5/8″ x 19-5/8″ x 15″ and are capable of supporting loads up to 13,619 lb. while accommodating movements from 3/16″ to 1/4″. The big tons were tested with a load cell to insure proper operation throughout the big ton’s operating range.

Big Ton Spring Supports Designed for Propane Dehydrogenation Facility

Big Ton Spring Supports Designed for Propane De-Hydrogenation Facility

PT&P custom designed big ton spring supports for a propane dehydrogenation facility in Texas. The components within these assemblies include the spring housing, load columns, travel stops, spring coils and lifting lugs. While both assemblies measure 42” x 24” x 26-1/2”, they were each modified based on independent specifications for operating loads and movement. The first will accommodate a load of 94,261 lb. and 0.085” of movement, while the second will accommodate a load of 102,219 lb. with 0.08” of movement.

This type of support is ideal for applications, such as pressure vessels, that combine very heavy loads with thermal expansion because of the stability they provide. The big tons were tested in the load cell to insure proper operation throughout the entire working range of the coils.

Big Ton Spring Supports Designed to Support a Pressure Vessel in an LNG Facility in Australia

These big ton spring supports were custom designed for an LNG plant in Australia. These units were designed with PTFE, 25% glass filled slide plates, and will be used under the saddle supports of a horizontal pressure vessel. The big tons were selected due to a combination of confined space, heavy loads, and thermal expansion. The units measure 28-3/8″ x 25-3/8″ x 13” and are capable of supporting a load up to 11,488 lb while accommodating a down travel of 0.31 inches.

Big Ton Spring Supports Designed for an LNG Facility in Australia

These big ton variable spring assemblies were custom designed for an LNG plant in Western Australia. They are specially designed with PTFE, 25% glass filled slide plates, and will be used under horizontal pressure vessel saddle supports. The big tons were selected due to a combination of heavy loads and thermal expansion. The units measure 30″ x 30″ and are capable of supporting a load up to 95,000 lb. with down travel of 2 to 5mm vertical.

Custom “Mini” Big Ton Spring Supports Designed for a Centrifugal Fan in an Chemical Refinery

Custom "Mini" Big Ton Spring Supports Designed for a Centrifugal Fan in an Chemical Refinery

PT&P custom designed “mini” big ton spring supports to support a large centrifugal fan at a chemical refinery in Texas. They are designed to support a total weight of 33,000 lb. within a maximum space envelope of 4″ wide x 16″ long x 8″ tall. As a result, these mini big-tons were fabricated using coils which could be placed in parallel within their respective frames. Four of the unites were comprised of four inner coils nested inside four outer coils to produce an operating load of 4,478 lb. and an overall spring rate of 2,740 lb./in. The smaller load capacity units were configured of four individual coils in parallel with an operating load of 3,735 lb. and a spring rate of 2,300 lb./in. The frame, load flange and all internal components were fabricated from carbon steel. The spring coils were fabricated from ASTM A-5160 spring steel. All supports were tested through their total working range to confirm load capacity and functionality.

Big Tons with W-Beams as Stilts

Stilts using W-Beams were added to these big ton variable assemblies in order to meet height requirements for an oil refinery in Port Arthur, TX. Entirely fabricated with carbon steel, these big tons measure 50 1/2″ – 70″ L x 18″ – 22″ W by 37″ H and are capable of supporting loads up to 113,734 lb with an upward travel range of .076″ – .816″. Permanent travel stops were later installed in order to prevent any chances of downward shift.

Big Ton Variable Spring Supports with Rollers Designed to Support a Load up to 60,000 lb.

These are custom designed big ton variable spring assemblies manufactured for a chemical plant in Brazil. They are fabricated from A-36 carbon steel, with monel rods, nuts and hardware. They measure 18″ L x 26″ H x 26-1/2″ W and are capable of supporting loads up to 60,000 lb. with down travel of .52″. These big tons employ the use of rollers for adequate mobility and are painted to protect against corrosion.

600,000 lb. Load Mega Ton Spring Support with Bronzphite® Slide Plates

600,000 lb. Load Mega Ton Spring Support with Bronzphite® Slide Plates

A total of eight big ton spring supports, “mega tons” were designed and manufactured to support two reactors in a power plant weighing approximately three million pounds each. The mega ton pictured incorporated eighteen individual spring coils to produce a load capacity of approximately 602,000 lb. and a spring rate of 112,500 lb./in. It was designed with eight Bronzphite® slide plates that measured 12″ x 12″. The 12″ x 12″ slide plate selection was based upon the ability to position individual squares across the load flange surface while simultaneously providing the total slide plate surface area required to support the operating loads.

By using individual slide plate squares, the fabrication and assembly time was reduced because a standardized mounting procedure could be incorporated and repeated as necessary for each big-ton load flange subassembly. Overall, the slide plates were incorporated into the design to reduce the horizontal forces which would be imparted onto the big-ton spring’s load flange during lateral deflection (movement) of the reactor.

600,000 lb. Load Mega Ton Spring Support with Bronzphite® Slide Plates

Bronzphite® slide plates, in particular, were selected because these big-tons will be used in a location which will see continuous “cold-to-hot” operating cycles and as a result, the robust nature of Bronzphite® proved more advantageous than other types of slide plates. The other two designs used nine slide plates, one with fifteen individual coils to produce a operating load of 594,000 lb. and a spring rate of 250,050 lb./in. The other design had an operating load of 300,000 lb. and a spring rate of 106,000 lb./in.
