F-Type Variable Spring Cans for a refinery in Oklahoma

Type: Variable Spring Supports
Size: 70 7/8″ tall and 17 3/4″ wide
Material: Carbon Steel and PTFE Slide Plates
Design: 30,980 lb. load/2,083 lb. spring rate
Testing: 35,000 lb hydrotest

PT&P manufactured variable spring supports for a refinery in Oklahoma. These F-Type PTP-6 spring cans are 70 7/8″ tall and 17 3/4″ wide. They are completely fabricated from carbon steel with PTFE slide plates welded on the load flange and internal guide. They are designed for an operating load of 30,980 lb. .with a spring rate of 2,083 lb./in. and 0.49″ of movement. These variables were hydrotested with a load of 35,000 lb. prior to shipment.

Big Ton Spring Supports Designed for a Liquid Natural Gas Facility in Australia

Big Ton Spring Supports Designed for a Liquid Natural Gas Facility in Australia

Type: Big Ton Spring Supports
Size: 19-5/8″ x 19-5/8″ x 15″
Material: Hot-dipped Galvanized Carbon Steel | A193 Gr. B7
Design: Movements: 3/16 ” – 1/4″ | 16,619 lb. Load
Testing: Load Cell throughout Operating Range

These big ton spring supports were designed for a liquid natural gas (LNG) plant in Australia. They were selected because the application required supporting heavy loads as the supported equipment undergoes thermal expansion during operation. The assemblies are fabricated from hot-dipped galvanized carbon steel. The travel stop rods and nuts material is A193 Gr. B7. The units measure 19-5/8″ x 19-5/8″ x 15″ and are capable of supporting loads up to 13,619 lb. while accommodating movements from 3/16″ to 1/4″. The big tons were tested with a load cell to insure proper operation throughout the big ton’s operating range.

Big Ton Spring Supports Designed to Support a Pressure Vessel in an LNG Facility in Australia

These big ton spring supports were custom designed for an LNG plant in Australia. These units were designed with PTFE, 25% glass filled slide plates, and will be used under the saddle supports of a horizontal pressure vessel. The big tons were selected due to a combination of confined space, heavy loads, and thermal expansion. The units measure 28-3/8″ x 25-3/8″ x 13” and are capable of supporting a load up to 11,488 lb while accommodating a down travel of 0.31 inches.

Engineered Spring Supports

Learn how the theoretical applications of spring supports are put into use in the real world. We will start with a review of the working principles of both variable and constant springs. See how brand new spring looks at delivery, and review installation guidelines. Learn the key points to review through the total installation process and subsequently when the springs are in operation. See how to determine if springs need adjustments, re-calibration, refurbishment or replacement. View in field examples, shutdown and isolation procedures. See the selection process required when there are significant changes to the operating condition.

The featured presenter, Jerry Godina has over 16 years experience as a pipe support designer and manages PT&P’s engineer training development program. He also inspects existing supports, consults on site remediation projects and oversees installation on a regular basis.

Compact Disc Spring Support Designed for a Heat Exchanger Application

Compact Disc Spring Support Designed for a Heat Exchanger Application

In this application, the heat exchanger (vertical vessel), has thermal movement of 1/4″, vertically.  As it expands thermally, the vessel lifts off its support structure and additional forces at the vessel’s lower nozzle are created.  With many heat exchangers, as well as other process equipment, the space between the support structure and equipment is restricted.  In this case, the space between the cantilever clamp attached to the vessel and the support structure is limited to only 5.1″.   This lack of space is unsuitable for placing the conventional spring supports which require more space.

The Compact Disc Spring support is designed to support large loads in small confined spaces with limited thermal movement (from 0 to 3/4″). By supporting the vessel with Disc Springs, the thermal movement is allowed (or relieved), which helps reduce the excessive loads and local stress on the nozzles.  This results in compliance with the ASME Piping and Vessel Codes. Due to a corrosive chemical plant environment, the two Compact Disc Spring supports were supplied with engineered 17-7PH Stainless Steel Belleville Disc Springs to combat corrosion.

F-Type Variable Spring Supports Designed with Stainless Steel Slide Plates and Permanent Travel Stops

PT&P custom designed F-type variable spring supports for an oil refinery in Saudi Arabia. These assemblies range in height from 14-1/4″ to 39-3/8″ and include stainless steel slide plates and upper permanent travel stops. Some of the variables include an additional pipe extension to meet the installation height requirement. The variables are fabricated from carbon steel and painted with a special paint to resist corrosion. All variable assemblies underwent a standard variable spring test prior to shipment.
