Mechanical Snubbers for a Refinery in Oklahoma

May 5th, 2017 Comments off

Mechanical Snubbers for a Refinery in Oklahoma

Type: Mechanical Snubbers
Size: Size MSA-10, 36″ OAL, and 30 1/2″ Pin-To-Pin
Material: Carbon Steel with HDG Finish
Design: Operating load of 15,000 lbs and a 6″ Maximum Stroke
Testing: Standard Load Tests

Piping Technology & Products supplied these mechanical snubbers with two end brackets, fabricated from carbon steel with an HDG finish for a refinery in Oklahoma. They are size MSA-10, 36″ OAL, and 30 1/2″ pin-to-pin. The snubbers are designed for an operating load of 15,000 lbs and have a 6″ maximum stroke. Standard load tests were performed prior to shipment. Mechanical snubbers have two modes of operation. In passive mode, i.e., motion caused by thermal loads, the resisting mechanism is disengaged and the snubber “free wheels” with very low resistance. In active mode the mechanism is engaged, and the snubber limits the acceleration to a low threshold value.

Hydraulic Snubbers Designed for an LNG Facility in Texas

Hydraulic Snubbers Designed for an LNG Facility in Texas

Fronek Anchor/Darling Enterprises, a division of PT&P, designed snubbers for a LNG facility in Texas. These Fig. 511 AD hydraulic snubbers range in size from 76″ – 85″ piston-to-piston and are fabricated from carbon steel. They are designed for a maximum load of 32,000 lb., 6″ stroke and have a 4″ diameter cylinder. Hydraulic snubbers are designed to protect the piping system when a sudden, heavy load is applied (such as an earthquake of high intensity), which can cause serious vibrations leading to damage and possible failure of the piping system. A cycle test throughout the full stroke from zero to fully extended was performed prior to shipment

Hydraulic Snubbers Designed for a Geothermal Facility

Fronek Anchor/Darling Enterprises, a division of PT&P designed and fabricated hydraulic snubbers for a geothermal facility in California. The Fig. 510 AD snubbers ranged in size from 34-3/4″ to 37-5/8″ piston-to-piston and were designed for a 50,000 lb. maximum load, 5″ cylinder size and a 6″ stroke. The Fig. 511 AD snubbers ranged in size from 56-15/16″ to 59-5/16″ P-P and were designed for a 20,000 lb. maximum load, 2-1/2″ cylinder size and a 6″ stroke. Hydraulic snubbers are designed to protect the piping system when a sudden, heavy load is applied (such as an earthquake of high intensity), which can cause serious vibrations leading to complete destruction. A custom three-bolt pipe clamp fabricated from carbon steel was designed to fit in a limited space. A cycle test throughout the full stroke from zero to fully extended was performed prior to shipment.

Snubbers: A General Overview

December 3rd, 2010 No comments

We recently posted a new Snubber article on our website.  It provides a technical look into both hydraulic and mechanical snubbers – how they are used in a piping system and how they function.  Most importantly, the article tells you the difference between various types of snubbers which is helpful in choosing the appropriate snubber for your piping system needs.

Specially Fabricated Sway Struts and Mechanical Snubbers

The photograph above shows sway struts and mechanical snubbers, which are combined and attached to large pipes and to stable structures. The snubber will dampen shocks and vibrations caused by sudden opening and closing of valves or even earthquakes. Piping Technology & Products, Inc. fabricated these for the steam piping in a power plant.

PT&P Acquires Mobile Test Facility for Snubbers

October 31st, 1998 No comments

In addition to the snubber test equipment obtained from Basic Engineers, PT&P has purchased a mobile snubber test facility from Commonwealth Edison, an electric utility in Illinois. The mobile snubber test trailer was in use at ComEd’s La Salle Nuclear facility.

This snubber test system is installed in a large truck trailer which was specifically designed to house a mobile test facility. The trailer is 47.5 feet long and is climate controlled with both heat and air conditioning. It has a one-ton crane that runs the length of the trailer and can be extended an additional 8 feet for loading and unloading snubbers. It also includes a small office.

The snubber test trailer contains test benches with a test capacity of 135,000 lbs. PT&P plans to begin providing field testing service to customers using this mobile facility.

Improved Hydraulic Snubber in Final Stages of Development

October 18th, 1998 No comments

PT&P has been developing and testing a better hydraulic snubber during recent months. Final independent tests at a university laboratory are confirming our tests.

PT&P’s new snubber design features a spring-loaded cylinder in the hydraulic reservoir which feeds the main cylinder. This design is more compact, and it allows the snubber to be mounted in any orientation. With the addition of test equipment from our recent acquisition from the Basic Engineers Auction, PT&P plans to have these snubbers in production by the end of this year.

3D Models of PT&P Spring Hangers and Hardware are now available for Intergraph’s PDS Plant Design Software.

Mechanical Snubbers

Mechanical Snubbers

Mechanical Snubbers

The two pictures above show mechanical snubbers which are used to limit the velocity of movement of piping systems when sudden accelerations caused by earthquakes, extreme wind loads or water hammer occur. These devices are designed with a brake drum which is activated by sudden movement. During gradual movement, such as would be expected during thermal expansion, the brake is not activated. Mechanical snubbers do not depend on hydraulic principles so they do not require maintenance during normal operation. The top picture shows the pins and swivel bearings used to link these snubbers to the system it will protect. The bottom pictures shows our inventory maintained for emergency deliver.
