A total of 232 variable spring supports were custom designed for a natural gas processing and separation plant. This project included various spring sizes from PTP-1 30 C-type to PTP-4 160 F-type assemblies. The variables are fabricated from carbon steel, galvanized and coated with a special 3-coat paint system to protect against corrosive byproducts such as sulphur. The F-types include 304 stainless steel and PTFE, 25% glass filled slide plate assemblies.

These PTP-1 F-Type variable spring assemblies fabricated from A-36 carbon steel, were custom designed to accommodate a height of 11-11/16″ while keeping the same spring rate. The F-Type variable is used to support the pipe from below and are typically mounted to concrete pads via anchor bolts or welded to structural steel. The variables are designed for loads up to 6,500 lb. and a total upward travel of 5/16″.

Subject: Variable Spring Support Design, Size Selection, Installation & Maintenance ** Webinar is worth 1 PDH Credit for TX Professional Engineers
Date: Thursday, January 5, 2012

This Webinar will focus on the different types of variable spring supports and big ton variable spring supports. Learn about the special features available, in addition to the design of a variable support. View how the different coil configurations produce a unique response to an applied load and see how a spring assembly is loaded. Discover the basic steps in selecting a hanger design and the step by step process used to size a spring for your application.
Learn about the different attachments, testing, and installation and maintenance procedures. View examples of failed supports provided by our Field Service Division and learn why they failed and how to prevent it. Gain knowledge of the valuable tips used when deciding to replace or re-calibrate a variable spring support, as well as adjustments, shutdown and isolation procedures.
The featured presenter, Jerry Godina has over 13 years experience as a pipe support designer and manages PT&P’s engineer training development program. He also inspects existing supports, consults on site remediation projects and oversees installation on a regular basis.

This F-type variable spring support was customized with a wire rope isolator for a facility located in Canada. The variable spring was designed for a load of 12,000 lb. The wire rope isolator is essentially a 1.25″ diameter stainless steel rope looped eight times between two chemically conversion coated aluminum alloy retaining bars. The wire rope isolator is effective in vibration isolation and energy absorption.

This custom designed variable spring assembly is comprised of a standard PTP-1-160 type F variable spring with a supplementary extension and load flange with a stainless steel slide plate. The variable is fabricated entirely from carbon steel with a hot-dipped galvanize finish. The extension is schedule 40 pipe, 8″ in diameter and 12-5/16″ in height. The slide plate is fabricated from A240 grade stainless steel and is welded to the top of the load flange. This support will be used underneath a 16″ diameter pipe with a dummy leg. It is designed for 1/16″ vertical travel and 1/8″ horizontal travel for an oil refinery in Algeria.

24,500 lb. Load PTP- 8 Type C Variable Spring Assemblies
Piping Technology and Products, Inc. designed and manufactured four PTP-8 Type C variable spring assemblies for a power plant in South Carolina. These variable spring assemblies with an average overall length of 87″ are fabricated from carbon steel. Each pipe hanger assembly consists of a variable spring, a rod, a clevis and hex nuts. The springs are designed for operating loads ranging from 22,500 lb. to 24,500 lb. and a total travel of 5″. For quality assurance, the spring coils are inspected and tested individually for proper operation.

Various Support Assemblies for a Power Generation Facility
Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and manufactured 85 support assemblies for a power generation facility in Georgia. These assemblies consisted of Variable and Constant Assemblies and structures made with carbon steel and alloy material. The variable spring hanger assemblies have standard three-bolt clamps and lug attachments for the existing pipes. These variable spring hangers accommodate operating loads varying from 8,000 to 18,000 lb. and 1-1/2 ” of upward travel. PT&P also manufactured a Fig.43 (heavy duty yoke u-bolt) for a 14″ diameter pipe. Components of the Fig. 43 include yoke, U-bolt, shield, and lug. The structure (beam, plate, angle, and tube steel) was painted green as per the customer’s specifications.
