Getting Started Tutorial

Print-Friendly Version

This tutorial will show you how to generate a single pipe support drawing in the Pipe Hanger Design Software.

Step 1: Open PHDS
To open PHDS, go to Start > Programs > Piping Technology & Products, Inc > Pipe Hanger Design Software [version number].

Step 2: Add a New Project
Add a new project by selecting Project -> Add from the main menu. In the Project Info. screen, the user is required to enter a project name. Enter “Example” as the project name, and select "FPS" as the system of units for the project. The "Project Directory Path" defines where the drawing file(s) will be saved.

Step 3: Add a New Support
After creating a project, the "Select Support" screen or Screen No. 2 will open. At the bottom of Screen No. 2, in the "Support" toolbar, select the "Add Support" button. From the pop-up menu that appears, select the support type of the drawing you would like to generate. For this example, select "Variables -- Horizontal Pipe" i.e. Variable assemblies supporting horizontal pipe.
- Add Support Button

Step 4: Support Detail Screen
The Support Details screen (Screen No. 3) will open next, in which the user enters the information for the new support.

In Screen No. 3, you can also select between "Single" and "Double" type of suppports. "Double" supports are supports such as G-type variable-spring supports, trapeze supports, or supports with a riser clamp supporting pipe running in the vertical direction. For this example, leave the "Single" radio button selected.

Enter the following information in Screen No. 3:

Support No: TestSupport

Pipe Nominal Size: 12"

Operating Load (Y): 1450 (Units: lbs)

Movement (Y): 5/8 (Units: in.)
(Operating Load and Movement are entered in the Y-Columns.)

If Temperature and Insulation Thickness are not entered, the default values of 600 F and 0" are taken.

Step 5: Predefined Assembly Selection
In the pre-defined assembly selection screen, select the pipe support assembly that is needed.

Step 6: Elevation
Next, the "Support Elevation" screen will open. Note that you have the option to enter either the top of steel elevation or the bottom of steel elevation.

For example, you may input the following elevations: (Enter the values exactly as shown below. For example 110' 10" is entered as 110' 10):

(Select the radio button next to "bottom of beam".) Bottom of Beam: 110' 10 [Units: ft. in.]

Pipe: 100' 0 [Units: ft. in.]

Step 7: View Support
In Screen No. 6, the generated pipe support and a list of components in the support are shown. From the toolbar at the bottom of Screen No. 6, the user has many options to edit the final drawing, such as adding a location plan, or adding and deleting components in the support. If any changes are made, the user must select the "Regenerate Assembly Drawing" button to update the changes. If a location plan is added change the selected template to Template0, which will display the location plan in the final drawing.

- Location Plan Button

- Regenerate Button

- Select a New Template for the Drawing

Step 8: View Drawing and Print
Select the print icon in Screen No. 6 to open the drawing in IntelliCAD or AutoCAD. In the CAD program, you can view, print, or save the final drawing. When printing in IntelliCAD, if the printed drawing does not occupy the entire page, make sure that under Print Settings "Print Area" is set to "Extents".

Step 9: Returning to PHDS
Before returning to the Pipe Hanger Design Software, IntelliCAD or AutoCAD must be closed completely.
