COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN
Piping Technology & Products, Inc. uses industry
standard computer software for engineering applications.
These programs greatly improve our design capabilities by
reducing the product development cycle and cost, while
improving the quality of our products.
The use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) significantly
improves PT&P's engineering, research, and design
capabilities. FEA provides very realistic and accurate
analysis of mechanical parts that undergo specified
thermal and mechanical loads. Performing and FEA is
time-effective and a cost-effective complement to
physical testing -- following a preliminary finite
analysis with a physical load test significantly reduces
the design cycle time. Interpreting and understanding FEA's proves useful to explaining stress
and strain conditions to customers in a highly visual
manner.
| PT/Modeler is a
smaller version of Pro/Engineer that has allowed
us to migrate from traditional 2-D CAD drafting
tools to solid 3-D modeling. The program uses a
featured-based parametric solid modeling approach
that provides useful information about the models
such as general geometric information and
material properties like volume, mass, and center
of gravity. Since computer-based solid models are
a lot easier to change than physical mock-ups or
prototypes, frequent design modifications occur
early in the design cycle rather than on the
assembly line, and thus eliminating rework. In a
typical design cycle, all essential parts are
designed and analyzed using finite element
analysis. These parts are then assembled and
checked for interference by PT/Modeler. The
process is iterated between design, analysis, and
assembly until an optimized design is achieved.
2-D shop drawings are generated directly from the
3-D model. Any modifications we make to the
drawings are automatically reflected in the
geometry of the models and vice versa. |

| Cosmos/M is the
finite element program that complements
PT/Modeler. The 3-D solid models created in
PT/Modeler are imported into Cosmos/M where parts
are automatically meshed to create finite element
models. The models can then be analyzed for
static, fatigue, buckling, thermal, and frequency
response by applying loads and boundary
conditions. If the analysis does not conform to
the allowable set of industry standards (MSS,
ASME, etc.), then the models are modified in
PT/Modeler until the designs are optimized. |
