Expansion Joints:
These are often used in ducts which carry hot
gases at very low pressures. The major design
parameters are the temperatures and flow rates of
the gases and the amount and layers of different
fabrics, insulation, or metal foils can be
combined to accommodate the temperatures and
pressures in the system. The fabric belt may need
to be replaced periodically. |

The photo to the
left shows a fabric belt being installed between
two rectangular metal frames which will be
inserted in the metal duct at the job site. The
belt is composed of several layers of material,
with the innermost layer intended to take the
high temperatures and the outermost layer to hold
its shape under the pressure of the gas. |
| The photo to the
right shows a larger round expansion joint with a
different outside layer on its fabric belt. |
